One of the world’s oldest living cities and contemporary of Thebes and Nineveh, it is said that Varanasi was already ancient when the Buddha visited around 500BCE. Locally, it is called Kashi, “The City of Light”. Situated on a magnificent curve along the western bank of the Ganges, India’s holiest river, Varanasi is the absolute pinnacle of the Hindu faith. Its opulence and divinity, its innumerable temples, shrines and omnipresent gods – this is the City of Shiva –   contrast sharply and sometimes shockingly with the all-pervasive and seemingly unchanging poverty and suffering. It is a magnet for the millions of Hindu devotees who flock here through the seasons and the years to bathe in the purifying waters of the Ganges and pay obeisance to the gods to escape from the cycle of rebirth.

In the early evening, travel by cycle rickshaw through the old city’s crowded thoroughfares buzzing with a cacophony of noise, lights, glitter, Bollywood film songs and devotional music, the sound of temple bells and the tempting aroma of street food. Stroll through the traditional markets, packed with shoppers appraising a variety of merchandise, before returning to the ghats to participate in the evening prayer. Join devotees in casting leaf-borne oil lamps on to the water, a deeply moving ritual that marks the end of the ceremony before taking a night cruise on the Ganges to view the shore side activities which takes you deeper into Varanasi’s infinite intensity.

Overnight at the hotel.
